Angels Intro

Do angels exist? What are they? These are questions that must be answered in a religious context. To answer these questions there is one key source that can be looked to for answers. Angels are mentioned 108 times in the Old Testament and 165 times in the New Testament. The Holy Bible gives great insight into angels; what they are, what their jobs are, and the different types of angels.

Angels are spirit entities that were created by God as a distinct beings separate from humans. They are not humans that have entered Heaven. The specific time of their creation is not told, but they were created by God (Nehemiah 9:6). We can assume that angels were created prior to man Job 38: 4-7 says,  “the sons of God” shouted for joy when the plans for Earth was lain. Angels are messengers that carry on God’s will and worship Him. They are spirits that do not have human form (Hebrews 1:14), but they can appear to humans in male human form (Hebrew 13:2), some appear in a dazzling light (Matthew 28:2-4), while others do their bidding unseen (Colossians 1: 16) . Because they are spirit entities, they cannot die. They do not marry and reproduce but we know that their numbers are great (Daniel 7:10).

There are specific jobs for angels. They worship and praise; they are messengers; they guide us; they protect us; they provide for us; they strengthen us; they encourage us; they are sent by God to help answer our prayers, they care for the believers at their time of death; they are sometimes used to punish us for our sins; and they can be used as executioners. There are a variety of angels that host different jobs and appearances. There are Seraphims (Isaiah 6), and Cherubim (Ezekiel 1).  The Seraphims stand behind God’s throne to minister to him and are depicted having six wings. The Cherubim expelled Adam and Eve from the Garden of Eden, stand guard to the tree of life, and they will form the throne as Jesus returns to Earth. Two of the named angels that appear in scripture are Michael and Gabriel. As you can see angels have a great variety of appearances and tasks.

Angels are like us in that they have free will as to follow the way of good or evil. Unfortunately, some chose to follow Satan into the darkness (Matthew 25:41). These are now his demons. They will be used by Satan to try and destroy the body of Christ.

The study of anges is known as angelology, It is a field that encompasses many different aspects. If their numbers are great then the questions we seek to answer or many as well. Hopefully as this article was read, it stirred an interest that will lead the reader to continue their research to find the answers that they seek.
